Exercise chapter 2
How to apply Satin Cord
How to Split Raphia
Splitting normal, plastic raphia: why would you do it? Embroidery raphia is hard to find. When you use normal raphia, which is readily available in stores, it is quite large. I like to split the width in three parts. It isn’t easy. Some do it with a rolling knife, but for me that doesn’t work, as it is hard to get a straight line without ‘hickups’. The raphia easily gets cut off when pulling it through the fabric.
Until now what works best for me is the following. What you need:
- cutting mat
- pin
- raphia
- ruler
Step 1: Pull the raphia out to a thin, transparent layer.
Step 2: Use a ruler and a pin to mark stripes (where you will divide the wider strip).
Step 3: Carefully pull apart the strips from each other.
Step 4: Fold together and use each strip as an embroidery floss to use in your embroidery.
