There is a lot to learn in the field of haute couture embroidery. Take, for example, the haute couture embroidery technique ‘Al Aire’. Although it is considered as ‘hand embroidery’, this technique uses an antique sewing machine. This is a completely different technique than what we know as ‘Broderie d’Art’. It has its own character and different applications.
When you compare this technique with Broderie d’Art, you immediately notice that a spectacular result can be achieved in a shorter time; at least … after you have mastered the technique. And although it seems to be one single technique, the application of the technique still offers a huge number of exciting possibilities.
Haute Couture, Theatre and Ballet
Thanks to his remarkable presence on the internet, I came into contact with Marco Jerez a few years ago. Marco has been working for more than 27 years on the Al Aire technique in his native country Chile. He works for fashion designers and theatre and ballet companies. He loves to share his passion for haute couture embroidery and he does so extensively on Facebook. When I invited him some years ago, and asked him if he would like to come and teach in the Netherlands, he responded with a resounding YES!
In the meantime Marco has given several masterclasses Al Aire over the past two years and I can only say one thing about it: it was special. With his warm personality he managed to win every student over and take them along on a special journey to discover the possibilities of a simple old sewing machine, some thread and creativity. He helped us over the first bumps and made us all very enthusiastic.
Allure
During the open days in my studio I notice that the demonstrations of this type of embroidery are very popular. To see someone working with with old tools and make dazzling embroideries appeals to many.
Masterclass Al Aire
A two-day masterclass to get acquainted with the embroidery technique ‘Al Aire’. This course is open to anyone interested in this special craft. The course will be given by Saskia in the studio of Saskia ter Welle, Gasthuisstraat 16 in Doesburg.
Bring your own: unbleached cotton, a small embroidery scissors, a box of long glass head pins, a box of extra needles for the sewing machine (embroidery needles, size 90/14) and a plastic embroidery ring with a diameter of 20-23 cm.
It is possible to use one of the machines in the studio. However, if you seriously want to work with it after this introduction course, I advise you to buy your own machine and take it with you to the course. Only then, you can become completely familiar with your own machine and make any necessary adjustments to the machine. After registering for the course you will receive an overview of all the things you need to pay attention to when buying an antique sewing machine and how you can ‘convert’ the machine to make it suitable for embroidery. A sewing machine maintenance technician or a handy technician can help you with that.
Please sign up for the free ebook through our homepage. You will receive the newsletters as well, with all the details about the courses.
Advanced Masterclass Al Aire
A three-day masterclass in the embroidery technique Al Aire, which is open to students who have already followed a basic masterclass Al Aire. In this course you will start designing and making a garment using the embroidery technique ‘Al Aire’. Emphasis will NOT be placed on tulle, but on a ‘solid’ fabric, such as silk dupion, cotton or another fabric (note: no stretch fabric!). It is essential that you are well prepared for this master class. This means that you have made your miles and mastered the techniques as presented during the basic course. We also expect you to have a broad sewing experience.
If you don’t want to use this technique especially in clothing, but are looking to deepen what you have learned in the basic course Al Aire, then you are very welcome! You can use these days to explore the possibilities of your own design, and further sharpen and develop your technique.
You bring the materials for this course with you. Think of fabric, haberdashery, reinforcement, materials for the embroidery, yarns, pattern paper, possibly a tulle of your model, possibly a mood board and of course your own sewing machine.

Response from a student:
Super fun this! Not easy, but there’s plenty to do! What I especially like about it is that it’s not super precise. That suits me. That doesn’t mean it’s random, but it’s ‘free’. That’s great.

Couture training
The programme of workshops, master classes and courses at Saskia ter Welle focuses on (prospective) professionals in the fashion industry who are looking for an opportunity to specialise in couture techniques. Enthusiastic amateurs are also welcome! The courses seek a balance between technique and inspiration, between knowledge and skill and artistic expression. Discovering one’s own handwriting is seen as crucial in the distinctive craftsmanship of each student.
