The Art of Pattern Cutting Techniques
Fashion is much more than just the creation of beautiful garments. It is an art form that requires creativity and skills from designers with which they bring unique and expressive designs to life. An essential aspect of the fashion design process in this regard is pattern drawing, which involves turning designs into technical patterns that serve as the basis for creating garments. In this blog post, we will explore the fascinating world of pattern drawing techniques and emphasize the importance of working from the third dimension. We will also discover an extraordinary designer and pattern virtuoso, Shingo Sato, whose innovative TR pattern cutting technique has taken the world by storm. And finally, we are pleased to announce that Shingo Sato will be teaching at the Dutch Couture Academy in October, and we cordially invite you to join his two-day master classes.
Pattern Cutting Techniques and the Importance of the Third Dimension
The process of pattern drawing begins with translating a design concept into technical drawings and patterns that form the basis for garment construction. Traditionally, many pattern drawing techniques are done in two dimensions, using flat patterns as templates for cutting fabrics.

Couturiers, on the other hand, approach pattern drawing from a third-dimensional perspective. They understand that the human body is three-dimensional and that garments must be adapted to the body’s shapes and movements. By working with mannequins or models, couturiers can literally drape the design around the body and make adjustments based on actual shapes and proportions.
Shingo Sato and the TR Pattern Cutting Technique
One of the most notable designers and pattern virtuosos emphasizing the third dimension in pattern drawing techniques is Japanese designer Shingo Sato. He has received worldwide recognition for his innovative TR pattern cutting technique, which has revolutionized the fashion industry.
Sato’s TR pattern cutting technique combines the freedom of draping with the precision of traditional pattern drawing. It allows designers to create complex designs that fit seamlessly with body shapes. By using geometric shapes and clever cuts, designers can create unique silhouettes and textures that were previously difficult to achieve.
