Are you feeling lost because you don’t know where to start with creative projects for this fall? I understand you completely! How many times this has happened to me in past years …
But that lost feeling is a thing of the past for me. I have discovered that it doesn’t matter exactly what I do, but more importantly that I keep moving. That I keep learning new things, seeing new things (yes, even outside my comfort zone!) and experiencing new things. And that can be across the broad spectrum of life.
Do what makes you happy (that’s how you feed your creativity!)
Therefore today just a few ideas to get you started. Find mostly things you just “like,” or “funny,” or that interest you. By working with it, you automatically discover new possibilities. Also in combination with the things you are already doing creatively.
Creative Projects for this Fall
For example:
1. Dyeing fabric with natural dyes
A big hit right now that I don’t have much experience with. Would like to delve further into this.
Why?
- To better understand the possibilities of natural dyes (making different colors, working with simple tools, without chemical states (ecological)
- To keep abreast of current sustainable trends
- To be more in touch with nature
- To see how I can dye my own (embroidery materials) and thus have even more impact on a final result of what I create and design
- To understand the feasibility for me on a small scale
- To find out if it is something I enjoy doing
What is important to me?
- That I learn and discover something new
- That I find out if it really interests me or if I prefer to leave this to others
- To understand the aspects that are important in the paint process.
I have dyed with avocado seeds and peels before. This I found fantastic to do. The color was a total surprise to me (peach!) and with the result I realized a relaxed design of a kind of dressing gown:
Included in The Creative Bundle (which I also referenced yesterday) is an ebook that gets you started on dyeing with natural dyes (Botanical Dying at your Fingertips). Finding everything together in a clear story that is necessary to get started is nice! And with that, of course, you put your own spin on it again. That’s how it goes for people who are creative themselves. You discover something, learn about it, and run with it. A circle that never stops.
2. Designing from a medieval ornament
Do you know old books that were handwritten where the beginning of a chapter is a kind of illustration? Well, I think it would be great to see how such a thing is conceived! The Creative Bundle includes a course on this and I can’t wait to check it out. And yes: three guesses for what! Of course. Plenty of inspiration for embroidery! (Learn to Construct a medieval Tile)
3. Interior Designer with a Neutral Color Palette.
During the pandemic, I focused my energy on fixing up our house. At least, I’ve made a start! After doing little for over 20 years, it was really in need of an overhaul. For inspiration, I took an online interior design course. The tips I found in it were so practical and achievable! It gave me many new insights that definitely helped the choices I made for our home. And yes, my design skills for fashion and embroidery help. But vice versa too! The insights are interchangeable. Handy.
So in the Creative Bundle, to my surprise, I see a course based on designs with a natural color palette. I used those very colors in my home. And I already know much more about the necessity of applying different textures for a warm and interesting impression. Where have I heard that more often? Oh yes, at Broderie d’Art. The embroidery art that perfects itself in this: creating interesting textures … (Designing with a Neutral Color Palette).
4. Magical Silk Ribbon
Not forgetting, of course, my contribution to the Creative Bundle: online course in Silk Ribbon Embroidery or Magical Silk Ribbon! A fine introduction to working with delicate silk ribbon: a ribbon type that cannot be compared to the stiff satin ribbon or organza ribbon. Silk ribbon is super soft and supple, a wonderful product to work with. In this course you will find everything you need to make a successful start with this special part of Broderie d’Art. A component that requires few special tools and combines effortlessly with smocking, embroidery and art quilts. Don’t you think that’s a fantastic premise too? (For the price you normally pay for this course, you now get access to 55 more online courses, ebooks and master classes! Valid until November 16, 2022).
5. Letters with Flowers (monograms).
Always wanted to embroider a monogram? In the Letters with Flowers course, you focus on designing these. From a letter start combining with flowers and leaves. Hugely interesting if you ask me. And again, so cool to expand your idea around the possibilities of embroidery. From the design perspective! So this one is on my to-do list from now on!
So for me, not a dull autumn. And also no choice stress: I’m just going to do it all. (Well, first finish the show in Bangkok for which I am now making a collection … ).
