Maybe you recognize this …
Sometimes, as a fashion maker or designer, you can get stuck in a situation where you are completely blocked creatively. You’ve developed your established routine, but there’s a sparkle missing from your work. And you notice it. You feel it. With some reluctance, you get to work. It doesn’t flow. You don’t “feel” it. So what do you do?
In this blog post, I offer some suggestions that help me. Super fun if you comment below and share your experience in this area!
Tips for Getting Out of Your Creative Blockade
Not only writers sometimes suffer from “writer’s block. It can also happen to you if you are involved in fashion. What do I do in such a case? I share my top tips here:
- Change your scenery: Sometimes a change of scenery can stimulate your creativity. Go to a different location, such as a park, a café or an art gallery. New environments can spark new ideas and perspectives
Paris is always a good idea to me! 🙂 - Get inspiration: Browse fashion magazines, visit fashion stores or online fashion platforms. Look at the works of other fashion makers, both classic and contemporary. This allows you to discover new trends or be inspired by different styles and designs
- Practice other forms of art: If you are stuck in your fashion work, try exploring other forms of art. Painting, drawing, photography or even dancing can help you get your creative juices flowing again. It can provide new ideas and perspectives that you can apply to your fashion work
- Collaborate with others: Collaborating with other creative people can be a great way to boost your creativity. Collaborate with other fashion creators, stylists, photographers or models. Brainstorming and exchanging ideas can lead to new insights and inspiration
- Create a mood board: Create a mood board to visually represent your ideas. Collect images, colors, textures and other inspirational elements that appeal to you. Putting together a mood board can help you organize your thoughts and make new connections
A walk on the beach can work miracles … - Experiment with new techniques: Try new techniques or materials you don’t normally use. This can break your creative block and open up new perspectives. For example, consider working with new fabrics, experimenting with different sewing techniques or exploring innovative design processes
Remember that creative blocks are normal. Don’t let frustration take over and be kind to yourself.

Of course, another idea is to sign up for a course. To learn a new technique, get inspired in a new environment, take some time to fully focus on your passion (of course, you can book a B&B and make a nice getaway out of it!) and meet new people. Actually, these are all elements that contribute to renewing your creative drive. It’s not called luxury, it’s called maintenance! We all need that (so do I, which is why I consciously spend time and money on it!).
May I invite you to see if I can do anything for you? Feel free to contact me (06-86803915 or saskia@saskiaterwelle.nl). Without any obligation, we can discuss where you are at the moment and what can help you get into the flow of creating and never get out of it.
The first course in the studio is on June 29 and 30! You can read more about it and sign up here.
